Amer Fort

Amer Fort: The Pride of Jaipur

Perched majestically on the Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) in the Aravalli range, Amer Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most visited attraction in Jaipur. Known for its artistic style elements, the fort blends Hindu and Mughal architecture seamlessly.

History: Who Built It & When?

The settlement of Amer was originally founded by the Meena tribe. However, the magnificent fort we see today was commissioned by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 AD. Raja Man Singh was a trusted general of Emperor Akbar and one of the 'Navratnas' of his court.

Although Man Singh started the construction, it was his successor, Mirza Raja Jai Singh I, who completed the major palaces within the fort. The Amer Fort served as the royal residence of the Rajput Maharajas for centuries until Sawai Jai Singh II moved the capital to the newly planned city of Jaipur in 1727.

Current Status: Today, the fort is maintained and managed by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Rajasthan.

Inside the Fort: Key Attractions

The fort is divided into four main courtyards, each serving a special purpose. Here are the must-see sections:

1. Diwan-e-Aam (Hall of Public Audience)

This was the place where the King met the general public to hear their grievances. It is a massive hall featuring 27 colonnades and a double row of columns made of red sandstone and marble.

2. Ganesh Pol (The Elephant Gate)

The main entry to the private palaces. This gate is famous for its intricate paintings and a Lord Ganesha idol placed at the top to bless the royals. Above this gate lies the 'Suhag Mandir'.

3. Sukh Niwas (Hall of Pleasure)

An ancient example of air-conditioning! The King used to relax here. Cool water was made to flow through open channels in the room, and the breeze blowing over the water kept the room cool even in hot summers.

✨ The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace)

Also known as Diwan-e-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), this is the crown jewel of Amer Fort. The walls and ceilings are embedded with thousands of tiny concave mirrors and colored glass imported from Belgium.

It was designed in such a way that even a single candle flame gets reflected in thousands of mirrors, illuminating the entire hall like a starry night.
